Compact mirror news: Free make-up on Facebook a 'scam'

14 December 2010 13:45

A scam has been fooling people into thinking they are getting offers for free make-up when they are communicating with friends on Facebook, according to a leading security firm.

Sophos revealed that the offers come from Facebook friends with messages such as: "anyone want some free makeup? I've just ordered mine for free and I thought I would post it her before the offer runs out. It's stuff like mac, maybeline, estee lauder etc!"

By clicking on the link, people are directed to a rogue website that asks users to divulge personal information including email addresses and phone numbers, instead of giving them any form of treat for their compact mirrors.

Sophos asserted that things simply don't come for free on Facebook and such platforms, so users should always be wary of the issue.

This month, the NSPCC raised £100,000 in just 48 hours after a campaign on Facebook called for users to highlight the problems of child abuse by changing profile pictures to cartoon characters.
